IUL
Indexed Universal Life, explained plainly
What it is, who it may fit, and the trade-offs to understand before you decide.
What IUL is
Indexed Universal Life is permanent life insurance with a death benefit plus cash value. The cash value can earn interest linked to a market index, subject to caps, floors and participation rates set by the carrier.
Who it may fit
- You want permanent coverage that lasts your whole life, not just a set term
- You can fund premiums consistently over many years
- You value flexible premiums and the potential to build cash value
- You already have basics like emergency savings and term needs covered
The honest trade-offs
- Costs and fees: insurance charges and policy fees are deducted from cash value
- Surrender charges: ending the policy in early years can cost you
- Policy loans reduce the death benefit and can cause a lapse if not managed
- Caps limit upside, even in strong index years
- Needs funding over time; underfunding can erode cash value
- It is not an investment, and illustrations are not guarantees
